In honor of Marty Whitlow
We are running in honor of our dear friend, Marty Whitlow, who is currently waging a courageous and inspiring battle against Stage III Ovarian Cancer. Marty is a wonderful mother, sister, wife, friend and teacher who has remained just as positive and upbeat about her diagnosis as she always is with everything in her life. She has approached this challenge with such grace and humor that you'd never sense there is any trace of fear, anxiety or self-pity in her whole being. She is also a runner and ran her first marathon (Richmond!) at age 52 (she wanted to run half her age in distance!). She has been such an inspiration and a joy to be around during her treatments and her docs and nurses can't wait to see her smiling face coming through the door! Go Marty! We love you so much. Jerri, Lisa and all your friends and supporters.

In Memory of Marte Emmert Stroede
We will be walking May 1st in the Charlotte “Run Like a Girl” race in memory of our dear, dear friend, Marte. Ovarian cancer took her from us September 16, 2009. Marte’s daily j0urnal entries expressed her positive outlook and indomitable spirit. She inspired so many others with her courage and “I’ll never give up” attitude. Her infectious smile radiated her inward beauty and masked her deepest fears. She genuinely loved life and people. There is a void in our lives, but we feel blessed that we knew and loved her for this short time. We will never forget her.

About Marianne

 Marianne and Dad

Marianne was a daughter, Mother, significant other, special needs teacher, and talented triathlete.  She was my Father, Chester Naylor's, special girlfriend.  They were a great team and she brought immense joy to his life.  She was the mother of 2 boys,  Justin and Alden, and a daughter, Annalise.  I think about her whenever I see my Father, when I run, ride, ....I think about her a lot and wish that she were here to share the joys of my children.  Lets come together and raise awareness and eliminate this tragic disease.
-Theresa Marie Naylor-Green

In honor of Patricia and Frank Junkermann
I live in California, but I will run my own 4 mile race on September 21 for my mom and dad.  Frank and Patricia Junkermann, who left this life much too young, were the best parents anyone could ask for.  They were always on the sidelines cheering on each of their three children whether it was Mark running a race, Bruce marching in the band, or me on the softball field.  I can hear my dad's cheers of "horr-rah: and see my mom's sweet smile.   I'm sure they are still proud of each of us.
-Laura Ann Junkermann Price

In honor of Ruth M. Hudson and Cornelia Maloney
I am running this race for the second year in a row in honor of my Grandmother, Ruth M. Hudson, who passed away in 1994 at the age of 81 from cancer.  During her travels throughout her life, she set foot on every continent and was an extraordinary woman of humor, grace and spirit.

I am also running in honor of my great-aunt Cornelia Maloney who passed away this past year from a rare, but aggressive ovarian cancer.  She too was full of life , spirit, gumption and heart and as all of our friends, wives, daughters, mothers that have been taken from this disease, left us far too soon!

Both women were dedicated to healthful living and would be proud of all the women participating in this race who are keeping themselves fit and active!  Bless you all for doing so!

In honor of Ann Burns
I would like to donate in memory of my dear friend Ann Burns, who lost her battle with breast cancer last January. She had been in remission for over 5 years before the cancer came back and took her life. She was a mother of three children and a friend to everyone. I miss her dearly. I would also like to contribute in memory of my nephews' mother and my niece's father who were both killed a little over 5 years ago.
-Prissie

 In honor of Elizabeth Gundlach
I am volunteering for this race as a member of the Luna Chix team in memory of the most beautiful woman I have ever known, Natalie Haas. She lost her bottle with breast cancer last summer and is in my heart every day. Natalie never complained and lived her life to the fullest and now she lives in me while I am biking or just going about my every day chores.

I am also a part of the Sherocks Trails Event in honor of my friend, Elizabeth Gundlach, who as we speak is fighting her battle with breast cancer. Her bravery and vitality are a constant inspiration to me. She is the mother of two beautiful young girls who she needs to see grow up and live healthy, happy lives. "We are tired, but not defeated!" Right, Elizabeth?
-Lorene

In honor of Dian Brown
Many years ago, my Aunt, Dian Brown, regularly visited her primary care physician to monitor her different medical problems. Each time she visited her physician she was told that the new symptoms she was experiencing were related to her already present medical issues. After about ten years of hearing the same responses to her discomfort she finally decided to get a second opinion (this was before the age of patient education and questioning your physicians). She was diagnosed with breast cancer that over the years had metastasized throughout 80% of her body. She was given 24 months to live.

With the technological advances we have today along with patient education, scenarios like this have virtually vanished.......and good ridens! I am thankful to have the opportunity to participate in an organization/event that encourages healthy living and supports establishments such as the breast cancer fund.

In honor Of  Maria Sams
I would like everyone to remember Maria Sams and the many other brave women who have battles this terrible disease.  I can never remember Maria complain about the treatment and the toll that it took on her body.  Although small in stature, her spirit was giant and remains with us all.
-Heather Board
In memory of Suzanne Hey
She was a co-worker and the first job I had out of college.   She was about 47 and was also an intern architect after going back to school later in life.  She was a single Mom to two "less than perfect" boys who were near my age and se immediately adopted me as a suedo-daughter.  We spent many lunch breaks trading tales of my dating life and her men and son problems.  We worked together for 4 years and the last two years I watched her daily battle with breast cancer.  Two years after we both left the company she lost her battle after the cancer came back.  I kept touch with her after we left the company and still think about her often.  I still remember her as the friend and co-worker that got me through those first years adapting to the real world.
-Anne Vig

In honor of Anne Survello
I would like to run in honor of my friend, Anne Survello. Anne, passed away on September 11, 2008, She had just begun a battle with endometrial cancer and passed away suddenly. Anne was a woman full of joy. She absolutely loved children and worked with them everyday at Ironbridge preschool. She loved all of the funny things they would do and say. All of us that worked with her at the preschool are trying to carry on her memory by sharing joy and laughter together. This race will be another way in which we can remember and honor our sweet and missed Anne.
-Faith Towles

In memory of Nancy Yunginger
I am running in memory of my beautiful mother Nancy Yunginger.  She lost her battle with ovarian cancer in September of 2003 when she was only 55.  Never did I expect to lose my mother just short of my thirty-first birthday.  My mother was my best friend and my inspiration.  She was also a bright light in the lives of so many other people as evident in the many memorials and kind acts done to honor her.  Her one last request was to do a random act of kindness in her memory...a testimony to her life.  Since then I’ve tried to do various acts - some random, some planned - to strive to continue to make this world a better place in her honor.  This is my first race...something I've been promising myself I would do....and finally I decided to just do it!  Thanks Mom for the inspiration and all of the wonderful memories.  I know you will be joining me in Pocahontas State Park on May 31
-Nikole Detz

In honor of Patsy Hinson
Our team named PATSY'S PACERS will run and walk to honor of Patsy Hinson.  She is a brave, joyful, and encouraging woman fighting her cancer like a true lady warrior.  Here is Patsy's story in her own words

"For over a year I had been seeing my family doctor for excruciating pains and was diagnosed me with a spastic colon.  While traveling  in June 2006, I experienced bleeding and was diagnosed soon after that with Ovarian Cancer. Surgery was done August 2006 and my cancer was staged IIIC. Chemo was delayed due to complications until late September. I completed 6 rounds of chemo and was cancer free until December 2008 when my ca125 increase signaled a recurrence.  Therefore, in June 2009 I restarted chemo.  I also had genetic testing and the results were that I am positive for the BRCA2 (breast cancer) gene therefore, I am also having MRIs and mammograms done every 6 months and being seen by a breast surgeon. Since my diagnosis in 2006, I have traveled many places and enjoyed each precious day with friends and family.  I have been so blessed to meet many brave survivors and am proud to call them my friends."
We love you Patsy!!!
